FOV
The angular extent of the scene visible through a particular lens and detector.
What it means
Field of view describes scene coverage as an angle, normally with separate horizontal and vertical values. It depends on detector size and lens design.
For a rectilinear first estimate, FOV = 2 × atan(sensor size / (2 × focal length)). Lens distortion and the actual optical design can make a calculated estimate differ from the published specification.
A 640-pixel, 12 µm detector with a 15 mm lens gives an ideal horizontal estimate of about 28.7°.
In practice
Use the specified horizontal and vertical FOV for the ordered lens when freezing a mechanical or mission requirement.
