IFOV
The approximate angular sampling interval represented by one detector pixel.
What it means
IFOV describes angular sampling at the pixel level. For a first estimate near the optical axis, IFOV in radians is approximately pixel pitch divided by focal length, using the same length units.
A target spanning one pixel is not necessarily recognisable or measurable with useful accuracy. Optical blur, contrast, sampling and the task’s required pixels-on-target all matter.
12 µm / 15 mm ≈ 0.8 mrad per pixel; at 100 m that is about 80 mm of geometric sampling.
In practice
Specify the required target detail and working distance alongside IFOV, rather than treating one pixel as a guaranteed detection or measurement limit.
