Emissivity
A surface property used when interpreting infrared radiation as temperature.
What it means
Emissivity describes a surface’s thermal emission relative to a blackbody under equivalent conditions. It depends on material, surface condition and wavelength.
Reflected environmental radiation can materially affect readings from low-emissivity surfaces. A correct temperature interpretation may require emissivity, reflected apparent temperature and other path parameters.
In practice
Use measurement parameters appropriate to the actual target surface and environment. A shiny metal surface needs particular attention to reflected radiation.
